YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announces its VR180, it was created for YouTube in collaboration with Google’s Daydream team. It works for both prerecorded and livestreamed content, and it’s compatible with Google Cardboard, Daydream, and PSVR. YouTube Introduces VR180 Format Which Looks Much Better Than The 360 Videos.

At Vidcon 2017, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announces the rollout of a new video format called VR180, and it’s half of a spherical(360) video. It was created for YouTube in collaboration with Google’s Daydream team. It works for both prerecorded and live streamed content, and it’s compatible with Google Cardboard, Daydream, and PSVR[PlayStation VR].

The VR180 format splits the difference between full 360° VR video and standard video. Mostly made off the idea of making VR content easier to shoot for creators, you’ll be able to set up and film your videos the way you normally would with any other camera. The video can be viewed on screens or on mobile.

3D video in VR isn’t the greatest idea, but it’s good that YouTube is making some effort to standardize and increase its availability. YouTube previously supported VR, stereoscopic 3d, and 360-degree content, but the company believes that the new VR180 format will make it easier for people to make their own VR content. And, content created in the format works seamlessly in and out of a VR environment.

According to YouTube, you’ll also soon be able to edit using familiar tools like Adobe Premiere Pro.

The Google Daydream team is also is working with several manufacturers to build cameras from the for VR180. Cameras from YI, Lenovo, and LG are on the way, and the first ones will launch this winter according to YouTube. All are expected to be as easy to use as point-and-shoot cameras, with similar pricing.The company is also starting a VR180 certification program, with Z Cam as one of the first partners. Eligible creators can also apply to rent a VR180-enabled camera from one of its YouTube Spaces.
